A new maintenance apprenticeship programme has been launched by Interstate Hotels & Resorts to mould future leaders in the hospitality industry.

The sector leader has teamed up with Hospitality Industry Training (HIT) and Cambrian Training to create a bespoke programme which recently welcomed its first intake of apprentices.

The 12-to-14-month programme will provide key on-the-job training for the 13 apprentices. They will have the opportunity to attend numerous interactive online workshops as well as spend time away from their hotel environment at supplier visits and masterclasses.

Often considered the ‘unsung heroes’ of the hospitality industry, maintenance and property managers play a crucial role in the smooth running of hotels and resorts. Teams are relied upon to maintain buildings and ensure a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for staff and guests.

As the hospitality industry works to manage recruitment gaps as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Interstate Hotels & Resorts is investing in the next generation of hospitality workers. The new maintenance apprentice programme follows the recent launch of its chef academy.

The aim is to develop and nurture their team to become future leaders and create an engaged, skilled talent pipeline.

Andrew Cunningham, head of learning and development at Interstate Hotels & Resorts, said: “I am thrilled to see the maintenance apprenticeship launch.

“This is an innovative programme that blends the experience and skills of an external training provider with our own in-house expertise. I am excited to follow the progress of not only the apprentices, but their mentors as well.”

Lyndy Tinculescu, relationship manager – national at HIT, said: “HIT Training is delighted to be partnering with Interstate Hotel & Resorts to offer training for its maintenance assistants.

“Interstate Hotel & Resorts is leading the way when it comes to upskilling its workforce and is dedicated to ensuring its maintenance assistance team is trained and developed to the very highest standard.”
